Google Currents is Dead! Long live Google Play Newsstand!

The reasons as to why Google has decided to discontinue the excellent Google Currents app is beyond our comprehension as the new app has less features, worse layout design and generally bad reviews with respect to the new ‘widget’ which many Android users found invaluable in the outgoing Google Currents. Let’s not even begin to get into the new app’s offline capabilities which many users are already sourly complaining about too! However, whatever the reasons for the change, Google has culled the old app altogether meaning our readers who receive stories via Google Currents will be forced into updating to Google Play Newsstand. Presumably, the issues users are currently facing will be addressed in forthcoming updates.

For existing Google Currents users, the change will be amazingly annoying – but easy. Your subscriptions from Google Currents will be kept and so when you first open up the new Newsstand app, all your old feeds will be there, only with larger icons than before; no bad thing. The article layout will be the biggest change as the new app displays text in a single column, like a book and our own website, rather than the old two column format which made for easier reading on the move.

For new subscriptions to AutoVolt Magazine on Google Play Newsstand, simply click on the image below to add AutoVolt Magazine to your subscriptions. As Google have only just done the app replacement, there are still many mentions of Google Currents during the process, but we fully expect Google to resolve this as the Currents purge continues.
